Jinuo Shan. Jinuo New Year Celebrations 2011

In Xishuangbanna, in the south-west corner of Yunnan, each different tea making region, tea mountain, tea village, has it's own ethnic minorities, traditions, culture and tea making practices. These all produce teas that have unique qualities.

Here are photos from Jinuo New Year Celebrations which fall at the end of January. The Jinuo people are one of the great tea producers in Xishuangbanna. You le shan, as it was then called, was one of the original Six Famous Tea Mountains. In this area of Jinuo Shan, not far from Jinghong, they are more or less bereft of tea trees, relying on banana and rubber for cash crops. One has to ravel much further into Jinuo Shan to find the old tea gardens thats still exist.

In this village, on the edge of Jinuo Shan, there has been extensive clear-cutting, mostly for rubber trees. This village has no old tea trees. One has to travel much further into Jinuo Shan to find old tea trees that are the Jinuo People's heritage as the guardians of one of the oldest tea mountains.
